Search for a mobile app agency in Indonesia and you get dozens of names with similar promises. The difference shows later: in the app rating, in how many people keep using it, and in what happens after launch. This checklist helps you compare agencies on what actually decides that.

What a Mobile App Agency Does

A mobile app agency plans, designs, builds and launches iOS and Android apps for a business. A full-service agency does it in one team: user research, product strategy, UX/UI design, development, the back office and integrations, usability testing, and improvements after launch. Some agencies only build what you hand them; others start by asking whether the plan is right. Know which one you need.

1. Look at Live Apps, Not Portfolio Slides

Ask for apps you can install today. Check the rating, the recent reviews and how often they are updated. Ask what changed after launch and why. An agency that can tell you the numbers behind its apps measures its work.

From our own projects: One by IFG reached 75K users in 8 months with a 4.9 rating, and Mirae Asset Sekuritas launched its trading app to a 4.7 rating after research before launch.

2. Ask How They Decide What to Build

The most expensive mistake in an app is building the wrong thing well. Good agencies test flows with real users while they are still prototypes, when changes are cheap. Five to eight people per user group usually show the biggest problems.

After a usability-led redesign, Bahana Sekuritas' DXTrade made registration 62% faster and finding a product 92% faster.

3. Prefer One Team for Design and Development

When one vendor designs and another builds, details get lost at the hand-over: animations, edge cases, empty states, error messages. One team means the version you tested is the version that ships, and someone is accountable for the result.

4. Check That They Know Your Industry's Rules

Finance, securities and insurance apps in Indonesia need flows that satisfy OJK requirements, and every app that handles personal data has to follow UU PDP No. 27/2022. Apps also have to pass Apple and Google review. Ask how the agency handles consent, data storage and store approval before you sign.

5. Agree on Life After Launch

Launch is the start. Ask what happens in the first three months: who watches crashes and analytics, how often releases go out, and how fixes are prioritised. PLN Mobile was revamped after usability tests with 8 personas across Indonesia: the work continued well past the first release.

6. Make Sure You Own Everything

The source code, the design files and the App Store and Google Play accounts should be in your company's name. Put it in the contract. It keeps you free to switch teams or bring the work in-house later.

Many companies start with an agency for the first version and build an in-house team once the app proves itself.

  3. Who designs and who builds, and do they sit in the same team?
  4. How do you handle personal data and store review?
  5. What happens in the first three months after launch?
  6. Who owns the code, design files and store accounts?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a mobile app agency do?

It plans, designs, builds and launches iOS and Android apps for a business. A full-service agency covers user research, UX/UI design, development, the back office and integrations, testing, and improvements after launch.

Should I hire an agency, a freelancer or an in-house team?

A freelancer suits a small, well-defined app. An agency suits a product that needs research, design, development and testing at once, with one accountable team. An in-house team makes sense once the app is core to the business and needs constant releases; many companies start with an agency and build the in-house team later.

How much does a mobile app cost in Indonesia?

There is no fixed price. The cost follows the number of features and screens, iOS, Android or both, integrations and back office, how much research and testing you want, and support after launch. Ask agencies to scope a first version with you before quoting.

How long does it take to build an app?

A focused first version usually takes a few months, depending on scope, integrations and approvals. Research and prototype testing at the start add a few weeks but usually save more time later.

Who should own the source code?

You should. Make sure the contract gives you the source code, design files, and the App Store and Google Play accounts in your company's name.
